Assault in the First Degree
Today I got notice that I'll be doing my first trial, set to begin on August 17. Fortunately, it's nothing major, just a Class A Felony. That's right, an A1 and I don't mean steak sauce. I'm a little bit nervous, but it should be interesting. Plus, I'm only co-counsel, so that takes some of the pressure off. And my fellow counsel has nearly one year of prosecuting under his belt. That's not to say he isn't an excellent attorney and role model.
It kind of illustrates how short-staffed we are out here in the bush. Despite our inexperience, I still like our odds. And at the very least, we can rejoice in the fact that we'll be saving the victim from a few days in heat wave boot camp hell. The victim is in the National Guard, and has been deployed, so he's currently training in hot hot Mississippi before being sent to hot hot Iraq. We offer him some cool respite in the YK Delta, and on top of that, justice.
