Living it up in the big city!

Our social calendar has been busier in Bethel, than practically our whole time in Michigan! The people of Bethel try not to let the lack of bars slow down their socializing. Besides taking your kids for a walk in a Bethel stroller, here's a few of the main events....

Dance lessons! This is a Saturday night event that we have yet to attend, but have heard raving reviews! Who ever would have thought we would move to Bethel and learn to Tango?

Continuing Education courses are also an option. There's a creative writing course, some fitness courses, and I'm signed up for a fur hat making course at the end of October.

There's a pretty good selection of musical events here. John Gorka is coming on October 23rd. We just missed my idol, Greg Brown, at the beginning of June. Every other Saturday is open mike at the local coffee shop. The same people tend to play every week as there's not a large influx of random people stopping by, but it's still pretty fun. The other night there was a guy there singing "Mr. Bojangles" and "The City of New Orleans." I had to think of you Dad!

There are also some annual events that are pretty famous in Bethel, just in case anyone wants to put them on their calendar for a visit up north. The Kuskokwim 300 is a huge dog sled race. It is a runner up to the Iditarod and reportedly a major extravaganza. It's on January 20 this year. There's also the Camai Dance Festival on April 7-9 which is a huge native dance festival. Alaska Airlines has a special right about now called PDF fares (trying to get people to spend their permanent dividend funds on airfare). So now's the time to book a ticket if you want to experience the joys of Bethel!
